Managing Directors

MDP's distinguished principals have an average tenure of 13 years. They have an interest in the success of every portfolio company, in part because they make a significant personal investment in each MDP transaction.


John A. Canning, Jr. John A. Canning, Jr., Chairman - A.B., Denison University; J.D., Duke University. Prior to co-founding MDP, Mr. Canning spent 24 years with First Chicago Corporation, most recently as Executive Vice President of The First National Bank of Chicago and President of First Chicago Venture Capital. Mr. Canning has more than 29 years of experience in private equity investing and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Exelon Corporation, Milwaukee Brewers Baseball Club, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and Children’s Inner City Educational Fund; on the Boards of Trustees of the Big Shoulders Fund, Museum of Science and Industry, and Northwestern University. Mr. Canning is also a Commissioner of the Irish Pension Reserve Fund, a Trustee and Chairman of The Chicago Community Trust, a Trustee and Chairman of The Field Museum, and former Director and Chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.

Paul J. Finnegan Paul J. Finnegan, Co-CEO - A.B., Harvard College; M.B.A., Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to co-founding Madison Dearborn Partners, Mr. Finnegan was with First Chicago Venture Capital for ten years. Previously, he held a variety of marketing positions in the publishing industry, both in the United States and in Southeast Asia. Mr. Finnegan has more than 27 years of experience in private equity investing with a particular focus on investments in the communications industry. Mr. Finnegan is a member of the Board of Overseers of Harvard College and Past President of the Harvard Alumni Association. He is also a member of the Board of Dean's Advisors at the Harvard Business School and of the Leadership Council of the Harvard School of Public Health. Mr. Finnegan is a member of the Board of Directors of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs. He is the Chairman of Teach For America in Chicago, a member of Teach For America's National Board, and the Chairman of the Community Works Advisory Committee of the Evanston Community Foundation.

Samuel M. Mencoff Samuel M. Mencoff, Co-CEO - A.B., Brown University; M.B.A., Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to co-founding MDP, Mr. Mencoff was with First Chicago Venture Capital for 11 years. Mr. Mencoff has more than 28 years of experience in private equity investing with a particular focus on investments in the basic industries sector. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Boise Cascade Corporation, Packaging Corporation of America, and Smurfit Kappa Group Limited. Mr. Mencoff is a Trustee Emeritus and a member of the Board of Fellows of Brown University, a Trustee of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Director of NorthShore University HealthSystem, where he serves as Chairman of the Investment Committee.

Nicholas W. Alexos Nicholas W. Alexos, Managing Director - C.P.A., B.B.A., Loyola University; M.B.A., University of Chicago. Prior to co-founding MDP, Mr. Alexos was with First Chicago Venture Capital for four years. Previously, he was with The First National Bank of Chicago. Mr. Alexos focuses on transactions that are in the healthcare sector and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Sirona Dental Systems, Inc. and VWR International, Inc. Mr. Alexos also is involved with the Boys and Girls Clubs of Chicago as a Board of Trustee, the Children's Inner City Educational Fund, and the University of Chicago Booth School of Business Council.

Michael P. Cole Michael P. Cole, Managing Director - A.B., Harvard College. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Cole was with Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. in the investment banking division. Mr. Cole concentrates on investments in the communications industry and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Sorenson Communications Holdings, LLC, The Topps Company, Inc., Univision Communications Inc., Weather Investments S.p.A., Chicago Entrepreneurial Center within the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce, Ounce of Prevention Fund, and The Lyric Opera of Chicago where he is a member of the Investment Committee.

Vahe A. Dombalagian Vahe A. Dombalagian, Managing Director - B.S., Georgetown University; M.B.A., Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Dombalagian was with Texas Pacific Group and Bear, Stearns & Co. Inc. Mr. Dombalagian concentrates on investments in the financial services and basic industries sectors and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Cinemark, Inc., LA Fitness International, LLC, and Nuveen Investments, Inc.

Patrick C. Eilers Patrick C. Eilers, Managing Director - B.S., University of Notre Dame; M.B.A., Northwestern University J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Eilers was with Jordan Industries, Inc. and IAI Venture Capital, Inc. and played professional football with the Chicago Bears, Washington Redskins, and Minnesota Vikings. Mr. Eilers concentrates on investments in the energy and power sector and currently serves on the Board of Directors of First Wind Partners, LLC, Magellan GP, LLC, Magellan Midstream Holdings GP, LLC, and US Power Generating Company. Mr. Eilers is also a member of the University of Notre Dame College of Engineering Advisory Council; and serves on the Board of Trustees of Hales Franciscan High School and Cristo Rey Jesuit High School.

Douglas C. Grissom Douglas C. Grissom, Managing Director - B.A., Amherst College; M.B.A., Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Grissom was with Bain Capital, Inc. in private equity, McKinsey & Company, Inc., and Goldman, Sachs & Co. Mr. Grissom concentrates on investments in the communications sector and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Asurion Corporation, Cbeyond, Inc., and the Childrens’ Inner City Educational Fund.

Timothy M. Hurd Timothy M. Hurd, Managing Director - B.A., University of Michigan; M.B.A., Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Hurd was with Goldman, Sachs & Co. Mr. Hurd concentrates on investments in the financial services sector and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of CapitalSource Inc., Nuveen Investments, Inc., the CFA Society of Chicago, Children's Memorial Foundation, and the Endowment & Investment Committee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

John E. Knutsen John E. Knutsen, Managing Director - B.S, Boston University. Prior to joining Madison Dearborn in 2008, Mr. Knutsen spent ten years with the Private Fund Group at Credit Suisse where he was a Managing Director with overall responsibility for the group’s sales activities in Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Prior to joining the Credit Suisse Private Fund Group, Mr. Knutsen was an investment banker in the financial services area at Goldman Sachs and Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette. Mr. Knutsen is responsible for Investor Relations at MDP.

Christopher J. McGowan Christopher J. McGowan, Managing Director - B.A., Columbia College of Arts and Sciences; M.B.A., Harvard Graduate School of Business Administration. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. McGowan was with AEA Investors, Inc. and Morgan Stanley & Co. Incorporated. Mr. McGowan concentrates on investments in the basic industries sector. He currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Forest Products Holdings, L.L.C. (d.b.a. Boise Cascade) and Smurfit Kappa Group Limited (f.k.a. Jefferson Smurfit Group). Mr. McGowan also serves on the Board of Directors of the Illinois Venture Capital Association.

George A. Peinado George A. Peinado, Managing Director - A.B., Stanford University; M.B.A., The Tuck School at Dartmouth College. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Peinado was with DLJ Merchant Banking Partners and Morgan Stanley & Co. Mr. Peinado concentrates on investments in the consumer sector and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of BF Bolthouse Holdco LLC, CDW Corporation, The Yankee Candle Company, Inc., and The Chicago Botanic Garden.

Robin P. Selati Robin P. Selati, Managing Director - B.A., Yale University; M.B.A., Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Prior to co-founding MDP, Mr. Selati was with Alex. Brown & Sons Incorporated. Mr. Selati concentrates on investments in the consumer sector and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of BF Bolthouse Holdco LLC, Ruth’s Chris Steak House, Inc., The Yankee Candle Company, Inc., and Tuesday Morning Corporation.

Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Souleles was with Wasserstein Perella & Co., Inc. Mr. Souleles concentrates on investments in the basic industries sector and currently serves on the Boards of Directors of Boise Inc., Forest Products Holdings, LLC (d.b.a. Timothy P. Sullivan Timothy P. Sullivan, Managing Director - B.S. United States Naval Academy; M.S., University of Southern California; M.B.A., Stanford University Graduate School of Business. Prior to co-founding Madison Dearborn Partners, Mr. Sullivan was with First Chicago Venture Capital for three years after having served in the U.S. Navy. Mr. Sullivan concentrates on investments in the healthcare sector and currently also serves on the Boards of Directors of Sirona Dental Systems, Inc. and VWR International, LLC. In addition, he is on the Board of Trustees of the Archdiocese of Chicago Investment Committee, Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, Northlight Theatre, Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Northwestern University and Stanford Business School Trust.

Mark B. Tresnowski Mark B. Tresnowski, Managing Director and General Counsel - C.P.A., B.A., University of Illinois; J.D., University of Virginia School of Law. Prior to joining MDP, Mr. Tresnowski was a partner at Kirkland & Ellis LLP, a firm he had been with from 1986 through 1999 and rejoined in August 2004 after having served as Executive Vice President and General Counsel of Allegiance Telecom Inc., a nationwide competitive local exchange carrier and portfolio company of MDCPII, from 1999 through 2004. Mr. Tresnowski is on the Boards of Directors of Nuveen Investments, Inc., US Power Generating Company, and on The Board of Trustees of The Children's Home + Aid.
